A full bodied, beautifully integrated Shiraz from McLaren Vale, packed with complexity and flavour and recently awarded 94pts by Wine Orbit in NZ.

Ortus Wines prides itself in making wines reflecting their story of adventure and passion. Built from a small land allotment in the heart of Barossa Valley over 150 years ago, Ortus Wines today creates exceptional small volume wines from several of the premium wine regions in South Australia, known to many as the heart of the Australian wine industry.

Their 2017 Single Vineyard Shiraz from McLaren Vale is the perfect example of just how far they have taken their winemaking. The wine welcomes you with a deep purple colour and radiant primary aromas of dark forest fruit, vanilla pod, cedar and pepper. The full-bodied and fleshy palate extends the welcome with blackberry and vanilla notes from its time in the barrel.

This Shiraz really offers terrific fruit intensity and a creamy mouthfeel, finishing persistent and silky.

Drinks beautifully now but will also cellar for another 10 years if you can wait that long.

Pairs well with rich game or beef dishes and will also lift a lamb roast to new heights.

By pure coincidence, the last of the Bittner name (meaning barrel maker) was lost in marriage when – drumroll please – the last (female) Bittner was married in the early 1900s… to none other than a Cooper. Over fifteen years, Julie and Paige have built their own legacy – Ortus. Growing fruit from their own McLaren Vale vineyards, Julie and Paige work side by side through every step in creating Ortus Shiraz – from the vineyard to the bottle, and sharing the wine with you. It may be in their blood, but from no money and no prospects, they have worked hard and lived true to the Bittner family crest’s motto: Nothing without labour. Today, Ortus are in the process of taking another step, by constructing a regional home to become the Ortus base. We can’t wait to host you in a warm and friendly space where we can connect with wine lovers directly – on our own turf!
