A highly rated, full-bodied Shiraz from one of the best and most iconic wineries in Australia and also one of our favourite regions for this grape. Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family-owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home on Broke Road in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria. Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon, and in the last 40 years, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and been named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. The Beside Broke Road Shiraz pays homage to Tyrrell’s home on Broke Road but is fully made by premium grapes from their Heathcote vineyards. Characterized by a dry central Victorian climate with cool nights and warm days, this region is undoubtedly one of the best sites for growing Shiraz in Australia. The wine is a bright fresh example of varietal and regional character, it has a core of dark plum, mulberry and chocolate balanced by fresh subtle pepper spice and flinty mineral notes. The palate has the soft rich feel of a full-bodied Shiraz but with a fresh red fruit line that helps keep the wine lively and supple. Drinks beautifully already but will also cellar well for another 5-7 years. Pairs well with BBQ meats of beef and lamb, as well as spicy Mexican food.

Tyrrell's

The Tyrrell’s estate, nestled in the foothills of the Brokenback Range in the Hunter Valley, is a unique patchwork of vineyards. Thriving in a diverse range of soils, from sandy loams lying on ancient creek beds to heavier red clays over limestone, these vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and refined wines in the world. All of our estate parcels are well established, with many sites bearing vines that are more than 100 years old and still producing fine wines that embody the characteristics and style of Tyrrell’s and the Hunter Valley. Here at Tyrrell’s, we recognise that we have a responsibility to make our operations as sustainable as possible and are committed to doing everything we can to reduce our environmental impact, whether it’s in the vineyard, in the winery or in our broader operations. With this in mind, in April 2009, we established an Environmental Management System (EMS) that was designed to operate in accordance with the requirements of the International Standard for Environmental Management, ISO 14,001. We also established a dedicated EMS team at the winery to monitor and record our energy usage. This allows us to review our environmental performance each year and measure our progress towards achieving our environmental objectives and targets. The four main areas on which we’ve focused are:
  1. Sustainable vineyard management
  2. Reducing energy consumption
  3. Reducing water consumption
  4. Reducing waste
